narrative: took of on patrol with #7, no contacts, landed to refuel. #7 had to leave, and about 2 min after he left, i noticed what appeared to be tracers in the distance, so i decided to check it out. as i was flying towards, i noticed something above me, it was either one or two enemy scouts, so, since i was near my drome, i dove for it. i landed, and i was coming to a halt, one of them started to shoot at me.I dont believe any hit me, but i had to leave for the night.

narrative: #5 & I left base and set course north for Nieuport. Upon arrival we circled west for Dunkerque and back around to the Belgian base near Ypres. No contacts. Back to Nieuport we went where se circled for probably 15 minutes. No contacts, not even friendly. When fuel got down to 1/4 tank we returned to base and landed safely. I had pressing business to tend to. I believe #5 stayed with his plane, I'm not sure. I'm feeling more comfortable up there now & I think my wingman is as well.

narrative: Arrived at base to find only two other pilots. Per orders, #15 was sent on solo mission to join us later. I took off with #13 but lost him almost immediatly. I flew my assigned mission solo and then returned to base having encountered no enemy activity. I saw #13 circling the base but he did not land. I took off again to continue mission and met up with #15 who joined me in patrol. We heard some sirens but saw no enemy. Later I spotted about 4 enemy aircraft very high above us. Luckily they did not see us. Later I saw two enemy aircraft also very high above us and thought they were diving down on us. I went into a shallow dive to gain some speed and then turned into them but lost contact. Not sure if they were scouts or B/R.
#15 [13?] and I returned to base.

narrative: First Patrol was escort mission, failed to hook up with B/R, don't know if he was no show or orders misread. Flew over his target and probable route to it, but saw nothing. Patrolled the front and nearby targets spotted a plane co-alt with me. I approached and eventually ran him down with my spad. Turned out to be a couple of fellow Beligans. I went back to patrolling our territory with no more sightings.
Second Patrol I was able to hook up with Dawson and we capped some installations for an hour or so. Heard sirens once, but couldn't see anything. Dawson lead us out of the area to some other installations. We spotted huns high above us twice towards the end of the patrol. Once it was 4 very high above us. We thankfully lost sight of them and they either didn't see us or weren't interested. A few minutes later at about the same spot we spotted 2 more. We were higher this time but they had a good 500 meters on us if not more. Again we lost them and even though we were almost directly under them at one point they did not attempt to engage us. Mercifully our patrol was over and we headed for home with no more sightings.

narrative: Entered server shortly before 9:15 P.M. and took off from aero with #19 who developed engine trouble shortly after takeoff. Those darn unreliable RE8's! Circled back to aero to wait for him. After a good reaming out of the mechanic and a good cleaning of a clogged fuel line, #19 was off and we headed towards hun lines. Shortly after crossing over mud #19 signalled for me to head south and cover route while he headed north to reverse route. Saw no enemy or friendly aircraft after we split. RE8 very sluggish to gain alt but managed to get some pics of two recon tgts before heading back to aero. The engine coughed and sputtered all the way home.
Photographed bridge and town, just south of bridge. Two towns just south of bridge but could find only one on map, recc'd both.

narrative: Inner Office War Department Memo:
Belgium underground was able to get this message out to us about one of your unlucky recon craft. The main point of the message was what the hell was one of your planes doing flying over the densily populated areas where AA gun in Belgium was firing on him. He and his mate had no chance of hiding with all the exposions going off. The report continues that he was set upon by four enemy aicraft where he put up a galant fight but in the end his fuel tanks expoded in midair and killed them both instantly.
I'm not going to tell you how to run your unit but perhaps some air cover for those poor soles in the future would be beneficial to raise the morale of your troops.
End Report!

narrative: Took off with #2 and #19 from drome on schedule. Proceeded to fly over enemy lines to targets at xxxxm altitude. Successfully reconned assigned areas, and enrout back west, ran into a severe engine mech. problem. I set the machine down hard on a hill top in the vicinity of x in enemy territory. I removed the exposed photo plates, and then set fire to the RE8. Carefully and undercover of darkness, I slowly made my way back to our lines by the next evening. Photos attached under separate cover to HQ.
