Nieuport 10 scout for Red Baron 3D Gustave Delage, chief engineer of the Société Anonyme des Établissements Nieuport, designed the 10 the the withdrawn 6M monoplane. The army preferred biplanes for reconnaissance aircraft as it felt they wes sturdier, offer the crew a better view, and climbed better. Delage compromised with a sesquiplane design, a "plane and a half." Built on the basic fuselage of the prewar Nieuports with a full upper wing and a lower wing of half the cord braced by two 'V' shaped struts that were to become the hallmark of the Nieuport firm until the production of the Nieuport 28. Under-powered as a 2-seater, it was found to perform well as a scout and served in this role until replaced by Nieuport 11's at the beginning of 1916. They continued to serve as reconnaissance craft eventually being replaced by the Nieuport 12. The 10's stayed on as trainers redesignated as Nieuport 80's. Nieuport 10's served in the air services of France, Belgium, Finland (captured), Italy, Russia, Ukraine, Japan, and the UK. This model represents the scout version with the forward area decked over and a wing monted Lewis gun.
