Albatros C.V/17
With the failure of the C.V/16 to live up to expectations, the Albatros introduced the C.V/17. The design team fitted a radiator in the centre-section of the upper wing, obviating the drag of the earlier 'ear' type radiators, they fitted a new lower wing with an elliptical tip profile, and substituted ailerons of reverse taper incorporating large inset balance portions. Finally, the elevator was modified to include triangular balance portions at the tips.
The changes resulted in a marked increase in maneuverability and an equal decrease in pilot effort in control. Here then was a good, solid comfortable aeroplane whose qualities were marred by the vagaries of its powerplant. The Mercedes D.IV engine was as much a problem in the C.V/17 as they had been in the C.V/16.
